Acclaimed science writer Timothy Ferris explores the beauty and wonder of the night sky in the High Definition documentary, SEEING IN THE DARK. Based on his book of the same name — which was honored by The New York Times as one of the ten best books of year — the film profiles people who have a passion for stargazing.
Featuring never-before seen astronomical photography, stunning special effects and a memorable original music score by Mark Knopfler and Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, the documentary charts Ferris’ own life-long devotion to stargazing and profiles the incredible work being done by other amateur astronomers. From kids learning the constellations to adults discovering planets and exploding stars, SEEING IN THE DARK reveals how technological innovations — inexpensive telescopes, sensitive digital cameras, and the Internet — have allowed these stargazers to examines the vastness of the cosmos in ways once thought unimaginable.
Timothy Ferris is the author of eleven books, including Seeing in the Dark, The Whole Shebang, and Coming of Age in the Milky Way, and two television specials, The Creation of the Universe and Life Beyond Earth. He produced the Voyager phonograph record, an artifact of human civilization launched aboard the twin Voyager interstellar spacecraft and now exiting the outer reaches of the solar system, and was among the journalists selected as candidates to fly aboard the space shuttle in 1986. Called “the best popular science writer in the English language” by The Christian Science Monitor and “the best science writer of his generation” by The Washington Post, Ferris is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has taught astronomy, English, history, journalism, and philosophy at four universities, and is emeritus professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
