You’ve gone as far as you can in the company…after all, we can’t have a black White Swan.
- As told to Raven Wilkinson, Ballerina with the Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo
BLACK BALLERINA is a story of passion, heartbreak and triumph of the human spirit. Set in the overwhelmingly white world of classical dance, it tells the stories of amazingly talented black ballerinas from several generations who face racism, exclusion and unequal opportunity while pursuing their dreams to dance. Interviews are combined with stunning archival ballet footage and photography to explore how the challenges of the past still exist in the ethereal world of ballet today.
Featuring: Joan Myers Brown (founder, PHILADANCO), Delores Browne (former ballerina, New York Negro Ballet), Raven Wilkinson (former ballerina, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo), Virginia Johnson (artistic director, Dance Theatre of Harlem), Ashley Murphy (ballerina, Dance Theatre of Harlem), Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux (Artistic Director, Charlotte Ballet), Amanda Smith (ballerina, Charlotte Ballet), Bianca Fabré, (University of the Arts), Roy Kaiser (Artistic Director Emeritus, Pennsylvania Ballet).
Produced by Shirley Film Productions, 2016.
