If prevalent and accepted accounts of American history — both scholarly and those portrayed by Hollywood — are to be believed, the face of the United State’s armed forces was white. FOR LOVE OF LIBERTY: THE STORY OF AMERICA’S BLACK PATRIOTS finally, and for all time, set the record straight.

The truth is that over 5000 black soldiers fought in the American Revolutionary War. And though most were not recognized as citizens or even free men, more than 200,000 took up arms during the country’s Civil War. Over 380,000 African-Americans served in World War I and more than 2,000,000 defended their country during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Yet most accounts of their valiant actions are absent from history books and contemporary film.

Eight years in the making, the film uses letters, diaries, speeches, journalistic accounts, historical text and military records to document and acknowledge the sacrifices and accomplishments of African-American service men and women since the earliest days of the republic. It also examines why, despite enormous injustice, these heroic men and women fought so valiantly for freedoms they themselves did not enjoy.

Hosted by Academy-Award-winning actress Halle Berry, FOR LOVE OF LIBERTY features dramatic readings by: Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Bill Cosby, Susan Sarandon, John Travolta, Ossie Davis, Robert Duvall, Delroy Lindo, Sam Elliot, Danny Glover, Walter Cronkite, Isaac Hayes, John Goodman, Ice-T, James Garner, Robert Townsend, Alan Rickman, LeVar Burton, Roscoe Lee Browne, Ruby Dee, John Amos, Danny Glover, Eriq La Salle, Angela Bassett, Chris Cooper, Alfre Woodard, Cliff Robertson, Lou Gossett Jr., Dule Hill, Donald Sutherland, Blair Underwood, Kris Kristofferson, Anthony Chisholm, Isaiah Washington, Charles Dutton, Jessie L.
